Honoring the Earth Through Art

Created by Chris Bellamy of award winning BioDesign studio Bio Crafted, this installation is made entirely from locally sourced soils, applied directly onto large glass panes without the use of adhesives or additives.

This innovative and unique approach not only celebrates the soil that sustains life but also highlights its fragility. By choosing an entirely biodegradable and recyclable medium, Evolving Earth offers an innovative and eco-conscious alternative to conventional PVC window displays.

The process, which uses local top soils and no adhesives or additives, was imagined as an alternative to vinyl window displays. At the end of the displays life it can be removed and reused, or returned to the ground.

The same process was recently used to create the entrance and exit Somerset House’s latest exhibition SOIL: The world beneath our feet.

A Sustainable Evolution

The silhouettes are a play on the iconic sketch The March of Progress by Rudolh Zallinger, which was originally drawn in 1965. The sketch was originally known as The Road to Homo Sapiens and depicts the different stages of human evolution over the past 25 million years.

The Artist Behind the Innovation

Chris is a biodesigner and engineer who is fascinated by how we can live in more sustainable and regenerative ways. After studying engineering at the University of Cambridge, Chris started his career at Jaguar Land Rover, helping to develop their first electric vehicle, the Jaguar I-Pace. He then stepped into the footwear and apparel industry, developing customisable and recyclable shoes, in the hope of reducing the impact of the 20+ billion pairs of shoes made every year.

After realising the incremental improvements to plastics and metals would never be sufficient to meet climate targets, Chris has changed his career to work with living things, as he believes nature does it better.

Chris has just finished his Masters in Biodesign at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London. His award winning research is focused on “livingness”, both as a materiality and a philosophical approach, by co-evolving traditional knowledge with the latest scientific research.
