Improving mental health in the workplace through movement and exercise

In today’s world, mental health challenges such as stress, anxiety and burnout are becoming increasingly common. We asked our friends at ONELDN to give us some tips to help navigate mental health in the workplace through movement and exercise.

Read on to find out how you can incorporate movement into your day —whether through small activities or dedicated gym sessions to help your state of mind, reduce stress, and increase your productivity in the workplace.

How are movement and Mental Health connected?

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress. When we engage in physical activity, the brain releases endorphins which help to improve mood, reduce cortisol levels (the body’s stress hormone) and improve our overall sense of wellbeing. In addition to emotional benefits, physical activity also improves cognitive function and boosts energy levels, which can contribute to greater productivity in the workplace and increased job satisfaction.

How do I add movement into my working day?

Small changes, big impact. Not everyone has the time to visit the gym before or after work but by incorporating small, consistent movements throughout the day, you can make a big difference.

These include:

Stretch breaks: Take five-minute stretching breaks to reduce muscle tension and clear the mind.

Walking meetings: Swapping traditional sit-down meetings for walking meetings will promote focus and increase step count.

Standing desks: Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day helps reduce the negative effects of prolonged sitting, such as stiffness and fatigue.

What else can I do?

Sleep Improvement: Regular exercise helps regulate sleep patterns, ensuring you wake up feeling rested and ready to tackle the day ahead.

Stress Reduction: Exercise is a proven way to reduce stress and anxiety. After a high-energy workout, you’ll return to your tasks with a clear mind and greater focus.

Social Connection: Many gyms offer group fitness classes, from yoga to spin, where employees can engage in a shared activity. Social interaction in a non-work environment fosters team bonding and improves workplace morale.

Physical Wellness: Physical fitness is directly linked to mental health. A strong, healthy body often leads to a more positive self-image and greater self-confidence, both of which are essential for maintaining mental well-being.

Go on and take the first step towards a healthy and happier workplace!
